The Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University is the governing body of the University. The Director reports to the Vice President for Administration and is responsible for planning, developing, and cultivating relationships with the Board of Trustees and providing leadership of Board office operations. The Director, with the Vice President for Administration, assists Board leadership with strategic direction, with the objective of helping to make the Board as effective and efficient as possible in the conduct of its oversight responsibilities. With the Vice President for Administration, the Director serves as the principal administrative liaison with the chair and vice chair of the Board of Trustees, with the chairs of the standing committees and other leadership positions of the Board. The Director provides counsel and advice to the President, the Chair of the Board, and senior administration and Board leadership on a variety of matters and provides recommendations as appropriate. The Director manages the operation of the Board of Trustees Office including overseeing the coordination of all activities, meetings, and agenda preparation in compliance with legal requirements and University policy. The Director oversees communications, reports, and remarks for and by the Board of Trustees, oversees the orientation and onboarding process for new trustees; develops and oversees continuing education activities for Board members, including Board retreats, self-assessment instruments and best practices; initiates and develops new policies or proposed changes as necessary for the operation of the Board of Trustees. The Director serves as an elected associate secretary of the University, the Corporation for Penn State; the Research Park Management Corporation; the Research Park Hotel Corporation; and the Ben Franklin Technology Center. The Director oversees the election of Trustees and the nomination, selection, and award process for the Distinguished Alumni Award. The Director is responsible for administering the Board of Trustees budget and leading a staff of three. This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree, Masters Preferred, plus ten years of work related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will have the ability to meet multiple tight deadlines; excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills; superior organizational skills, the ability to multi-task effectively; the ability to draw inferences and make connections and the ability to manage and coordinate multiple complex assignments. A clear understanding of the system of shared governance within the context of a complex, multifaceted higher education environment is strongly desired.
